Personal stories detailing small beginnings and struggles of successful people encourage me greatly. In In answer and response to the continual prompting of a friend, here’s my story of overcoming adversity.

I was born with pneumonia, after which I lived in an oxygen tent until I gained the strength to endure the outside elements. I cried so much during my infancy, I gave myself a hernia which required surgery to repair.

Once in the earth instead of ceasing, my struggles only intensified. My mother divorced my dad and became an alcoholic and drug addict. Growing up, my mom was either in one of three places: the bar getting drunk, in jail behind bars, or in a mental ward receiving rehabilitation.

In the absence of my mother and father, I grew up with my maternal grandparents. Though my grandparents adored and cared wonderfully for me, they simultaneously battled to help my mother recover from substance abuse and mental illness caused by it. This was very embarrassing and difficult for me to endure as a youth growing up.

When my father remarried and gained custody of me, I had a hard time getting along with my step-mother who refused to pamper and spoil me as did my grandparents. Once my parents relocated me from Orlando to live in the country, at the age of 12 years I battled childhood depression and for a short while even contemplated suicide I so hated my life.

Nevertheless I determined to cultivate inner happiness, overcome my circumstances, and make something of my life. I became the most-improved student in 6th grade, excelled at baseball making the all-stars and led my team to 1st place, winning the most games of any pitcher in the league.

I also reconciled with my step-mother who today I affectionately call “Mom” and have a special relationship with. As for my grandparents, I during my adult life cared for them for 2 years before they passed as I didn’t want to put them in a nursing home after they were so good to me when I was growing up.

Though I after 5 years of marriage suffered a horrible divorce due to my ex-wife’s infidelity and adulterous affair, I forgave her and happily moved on with my life. During my personal ground zero, I wrote Breakthrough For a Broken Heart empowering people just like me to overcome their disappointments and blossom into their dreams!

Today I am again happily married to the love of my life Karla, a gorgeous Canadian who is all I ever dreamed of in a wife. We are traveling throughout the globe revolutionizing the world, making an amazing difference in the lives of people everywhere we go!

Other notable accomplishments that shaped and further strengthened my ability to overcome adversity and uplift humanity are:

- Paul worked at Ground Zero in New York City the first week of 9/11, two stops from Brooklyn Heights where Paul used to live. Paul drove a rental car up to NYC from Orlando, FL as all airports were shut down for national security reasons.

- Paul helped a Muslim young man rebuild his home at the tsunami epicenter in Indonesia and spoke to tribal groups in Wamena who are “naked and not ashamed.”

- Paul comforted victims of genocide in Rwanda and Burundi where 1.2 million people were slaughtered.

- Paul spoke to leaders in East Timor during the war for independence before the UN recognized the new nation.

- Paul addressed University students and monks in Myanmar working together to achieve democracy.

- Paul spoke throughout war-torn East Africa journeying deep into the “bush” where villagers have never seen a white man.

- Paul lived in and lectured throughout India and China the two largest populaces on earth.]

- Paul journeyed to Pakistan twice since 9/11 to speak to large audiences about peace, non-violence, and reconciliation.

When I began speaking, at first I didn’t understand what captivated the audience so much and made them listen to me. Then I realized it was my own overcoming stories and small personal victories that empower people.

Here are the keys that most impact and transform people from my talks:

1. Transparency – people like something real

2. Humility – people can relate

3. Hilarity – people love to laugh

4. Insight – wisdom from my hardships

5. Inspiration – if I can do it, anybody can achieve greatness

6. Encouragement – a good word to uplift and propel people forward

7. Boldness – to defy the odds and silence the skeptics

Loving and lifting people from my own life’s difficulties is a wonderful experience that makes my life worth living.
