If you are thinking about getting a tongue piercing, you are doing the right thing by researching the pros and cons first. Tongue piercings are very popular for a myriad of reasons… be fashion for shock value, appearance, or pleasure enhancement (to name only a few reasons). If you are considering a tongue piercing – included but not limited to piercing of the tongue, tongue web, or uvula – there are several important factors you must consider before getting pierced.

Before we delve into the universal risks, each piercing has its own set of aftercare and precautions to be aware of. The most common oral piercing is of course the tongue piercing, which to a professional piercer is one of the easiest piercings to perform. Usually performed directly through the center of the tongue (although the tongue can be pierced in other places – but talk to your piercer first!) and the jewelry of choice is always a barbell. The barbell jewelry is used because tongue piercings will become swollen for a couple days to a week after the initial piercing, and the barbell can accommodate the swelling. After a period of 4-6 weeks, the jewelry can be replaced.

After a tongue piercing, it is STRONGLY advised not to smoke, engage in oral sex, or kiss. Proper cleaning should be done frequently, because the mouth is full of bacteria. Although saliva is the body’s natural way of combating harmful bacteria, with an open wound such as a piercing, the odds of infection do increase. With an open wound such as a tongue piercing, the risk of diseases being transferred is greater too , including the Hepatitis strains and HIV. Heed the advice given to you by your piercer to prevent serious and unhealthy scenarios!

The tongue web, formerly called the frenulum linguae, is located beneath the tongue. This is a piercing that is NOT applicable to everyone – some people do not have tongue webs pronounced enough to pierce! Many piercer refuse to do this piercing, not because of any extraordinary risks per say, but because most people do not clean their tongue web piercing frequently enough (which leads to plaque build up) or can’t keep their tongue on the roof of their mouth during the piercing. If you do get this piercing, clean it regularly as it is an open wound in the mouth and therefore prone to infection. If the piercing is not deep enough, the body will “reject” or “push out” the piercing – not particularly harmful, but unpleasant and should be avoided all the same.

The final piercing that is wholly located within the mouth is considered an extreme piercing and it is still very rare (and some may argue, completely impractical even by piercing standards). The Uvula, informally known as the “dangly thing” or “punching bag” located in the back of the throat by the tonsils, can be pierced. Most piercers will not perform this, even though the procedure is simple. Many people do not have their gag reflex controlled enough to successfully go through with the piercing (just imagine the hazards of gagging with a sharp needle in your mouth!), and the uvula is very designers pierce of tissue hence the possibility of the body rejecting the piercing is very real. Jewelry that is rejected will almost definitely be swallowed, which can pose health risks.

This article is not to deter you from getting a piercing of the tongue, tongue web, or uvula, but it is not wise to trapeze into a piercing parlor (and side note: don’t even THINK about getting an oral piercing anywhere other than a sterile professional piercing parlor) to get an oral piercing on a whim. To prevent infection or rejection, consider your lifestyle: Do you smoke? This alone will definitely harass your new piercing and prolong the healing process. Are you orally fixated, therefore prone to tinkering and playing with your jewelry? Constant playing with tongue piercings can cause irreversible damage to the teeth and gums. Are you getting surgery soon? Your oral piercing will have to come out – surgeons insist on it to prevent surgical complications – and by the time you come out of anesthesia, your piercing will be completely healed. Have you had a tongue pierced before and want to get it repierced? Some piercers will refuse on the basis that scar tissue is very difficult to pierce through. Listen to your intuition. If your gut feeling is saying not to get an oral piercing, don’t do it! If you do get an oral piercing, pay close attention to your body. If something is wrong, your body will let you know!

The swimwear Scout Cookie Campaign is the biggest annual fundraiser for the world’s largest organization dedicated to all girls. Can Girl Scouts use simple marketing strategies when selling their cookies? My granddaughter’s Girl Scout troop conducted a Women in Business Seminar. I had the opportunity, along with two other professional women to share with the troop and their mothers, what we do in our business.

To help the young ladies understand the logistics of implementing simple marketing strategies in their Girl Scout Cookie Campaign, I presented the following four questions for them to write down, think about and better understand what the process of marketing is all about:

1. What strategies do you use when selling your Girl Scout cookies?

2. What do you do to get new customers to buy your cookies?

3. Why is customer loyalty important to you?

4. Is it a good idea to send a thank you note to the people buying your Girl Scout cookies?

Some of their current selling strategies include going door to door, giving their order forms to their parents to solicit orders from their friends and co-workers, as well as setting up tables outside of local businesses to sell on site. Although the troop didn’t quite meet their goal for cookie sales prior to this seminar, we went over some basic selling strategies on how to prepare for increased sales next year. Here are seven useful tips:

• Pre-selling and generating excitement, at least a month before you are to begin taking orders.

• Be sure to keep a record of your total amount of boxes sold and sales generated from the year before.

• Know what your cookie goals are, compared to last years.

• Do not wear out the same customers every year to buy over and over again. You need to find new customers.

• Send a thank you note or create a simple one to give to each person buying cookies from you when you deliver them.

• Keep a record of what your best selling to your least selling variety is.

• Think about selling your leftover boxes at flea markets. You can partner with other troop members to invest in a table if the entire troop does not participate. If everyone doesn’t participate, then don’t let that stop you. Be savvy!

I bet most people who accidentally stumble across this article were not around in the 60′s. The time of free celebrity and an explosion of self-expression after years of being seen but not heard. Years of war and post-war depression and suppression.

Unfortunately, I too was not around to see this decade, but I’ve seen the movies, I’ve heard the music and I’ve read the gig reviews and it seems nothing short of a great experience.

Something that strikes quite fundamentally about the 60′s was fashion and, such is the theme of this article I would like to talk about clothing and fashion in their era. The fashion industry in the sixties was not as marketable as it is today, with many garments hand-made by people that chose to be different.

Just recently however, we have been seeing fashion trends from this era pop their simone perele back into the mainstream. I personally think that most of it should have stayed in the 60′s as they seem somewhat naff these days, but I do love to see designers inject some of the spirit of the 60′s into their work, rather than copy those old styles completely.

One of my favourite labels to be showing an influence of this recently is Gio Goi Some of their designs represent a distinct retro feel, be it the minimalist approach of their embossed, early computer stayed “Connected” t-shirt, or their Doves t-shirt, which oozes 60′s revival through and through.

Something that always intrigues me is that, no matter the state of society, fashion always reflects it. And where songwriters sing about memories, movies tell tales of fiction, fact and romance, fashion will always be there paying homage to times gone by in it’s own unique way.

Candle making produces a product that is so popular and desired by so many people. Many people love to have them as decorative item, while others like to have them burning all the time. Perfumed candles are the most popular candles for home as they provide a long lasting aroma.

This is not an expensive hobby to set up and the wax to make the candles is not really very costly either. If you use good quality fragrances you will find them a little more expensive initially, but as they are concentrated you do not use very much and they do have have a much better throw off perfume. If you are making candles to clothing then I would definitely recommend you use the better quality fragrance because you will be looking for repeat business.

Prepare your molds well so that you candles do not look messy.

Do this step before you start melting your wax. Make sure the molds are clean with wicks in place, and ready for warming before you pour. Warm molds will prevent you from having ‘pour marks’ down the side bags your molds.

Glass molds MUST be heated before being poured into. Put them into a cold oven and bring the temperature up to 150 degrees. At this temperature you should not have any problems with breaking glass. For safety sake, anyway, it is suggested that you use slightly thicker glass. Stay away from the very thin fragile glass because you don’t want them to break when they are burning.

Second pour of wax.

To prevent a drop in the top of your finished candles you will need to top up your candles (a second pour), when your wax in the mold is cool to touch. Heat the second pour of wax (making sure to give it a couple of minutes good stirring) to approximately 10 degrees hotter than your first pour, then top up your candles. If you do this, and your candles were left to get cool enough, the top should remain nice and flat after the second pour. But, if you do a second pour when the original wax is still too warm, the completed candle will have a nipple effect at the top.

It is important that when using colored wax that the second pour is done with some of the original wax or the color may not match.

Wicks

It is possible to buy pre-tabbed and pre-waxed wicks, but it is up to you what you buy. Wicks are a very important part of candle making because of the burn factor. You will need to research this, especially if you are making more novelty candles. You will get plenty of help from a good supplier.

Flat Candle Base

If the base of your candle is not flat simply place it on a hot pan surface and melt it down so that it is flat.

Christmas Candles

For Christmas candles you can of course use red and green wax and you can also use decorations to dress up any candles that you make. If you buy long taper candles you can roll white candles in red or green and use them for the table. There are various ways to add gold or silver to your candles as well. When making your own candles you can layer Christmas decorations on the outside of the candle. Just make sure that when you are using any decorations that they will not cause a fire hazard.

Learning how to make perfumes paper flowers such as those that you see in some of the stores around town or on some of the television shows on the T.V. is not as hard as you might think. Although after I was involved in a devastating car accident a while ago, and had been bed ridden for many months with no transportation, I thought that learning to make these and other paper flowers might be something difficult for me because of no prior interest. I began looking for alternative activities to get involved in (besides watching television!) and I eventually discovered how interesting and gratifying making Mexican paper flowers can be.

Making Mexican paper flowers gave me an outlet of how to express myself through creativity. Not only is it an inexpensive hobby, but it also is very relaxing and when you finally have a finished product it is exceptionally rewarding. I thought that it would only be an activity I would perform during my recuperation period, but I was wrong. Making these Mexican paper flowers has now become one of my favorite pass times.

There are only a few items that are needed to make a Mexican paper flower. Tissue paper or crepe paper, pipe cleaner, twisty wire tie, scissors, ruler, coloring markers, perfume, and an imagination. Here is your first lesson learning how to make Mexican paper flowers:

1) First, you want to make the leaves, so you cut a pile of 6 to 10 pieces of paper 10 inches wides, and 14-20 inches long.

2) Next, you want to make approximately 1 inch folds in the layers (accordion style).

3) Then you need to tie the shoes or the accordion with a twisty wire tie. Then you get to use your creative mind and trim all the edges with your scissors.

4) Then, start at the outside of the flower and start to bend each piece of tissue paper in half (be very gentle with this step).

5) The last step is use the pipe cleaner for the stem of your festive Mexican paper flower and as a special additive you can also spray that Mexican paper flower with perfume to make it perfect.

A situation arose in my own life where friends of my family commented on how original and gorgeous the Mexican flowers I made were. This made me feel extremely good inside.
